STAMFORD — Saks Off 5th announced Monday plans to open later this year a new department store in the city, marking the return of a retailer of discounted luxury merchandise that last year closed its establishment at Stamford Town Center mall.

Set for a fall debut, the new Saks Off 5th store would cover approximately 30,000 square feet and employ about 60 people at 110 High Ridge Road. For more than 50 years, 110 High Ridge housed a Lord + Taylor department store, which closed in early 2021 in the wake of L+T’s bankruptcy.

“Our customers continue to share with us that the in-store experience is an important part of their shopping journey at Saks Off 5th,” Rob Brooks, president of O5, Saks Off 5th’s store division, said in a statement. “We’re excited to return to the Stamford community and provide our loyal customers an enhanced shopping experience in an elevated environment with access to the designers they know and love.”

About two miles south of 110 High Ridge, a Saks Off 5th store had operated from June 2015 to December 2021 at Stamford Town Center. That establishment succeeded a Saks Fifth Avenue store, which closed in 2014 after more than 30 years at the mall. Both groups of stores are owned by Hudson’s Bay Co., with Saks Off 5th operating as a discount-based alternative to luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue.

The nearest Saks Off 5th store to Stamford is in White Plains, N.Y. In neighboring Scarsdale, N.Y., a grand opening for a new Saks Off 5th store is scheduled for Thursday.

The nearest Saks Fifth Avenue store to Stamford is on Greenwich Avenue in Greenwich, accompanied by a Barneys at Saks store and a Saks jewelry store across the street, as well as a Saks shoe shop around the corner.
