Poland will pursue its own interests and will not bend to any "foot stamping" by Brussels, Poland's prime minister said on Wednesday
"Poland is pursuing its own interests and will not stray from this path, we will not react to any foot-stamping bureaucrats in Brussels," Mateusz Morawiecki told a press conference commenting on Poland's ruling party leader's recent announcement of a reset in relations with the EU.
In a magazine interview, Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of the Law and Justice party (PiS), said Poland would have to consider "rearranging relations with the EU" in connection with Warsaw's protracted rule-of-law dispute with the EU over judicial reforms.
Morawiecki also accused Poland's largely pro-EU opposition of subservience towards either Russia or the EU and Berlin. "I have some news for both the liberals and the post-communists... Poland will pursue a policy aimed at the best-possible securement of our interests," he said.
The conflict, which has blocked Poland's access to an EU post-pandemic recovery fund, revolves especially around a disciplinary chamber for judges established by the government, which the European Commission (EC) says could put courts under political pressure.
The EC has blocked Poland's access to the recovery funding until it complies with previously agreed milestones that include closing down the chamber.
In a response, a new law penned by Andrzej Duda, Poland's president, replaces the disciplinary chamber with a "professional responsibility chamber." However, EC head Ursula von der Leyen said recently that this may prove insufficient to unblock the post-pandemic funding.
Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice party, made the claim at a ceremony presenting a report detailing Poland's losses resulting from the German invasion.
