At the corner of Wall Street and Greenwood Avenue in downtown Bend, hundreds of people came out to participate in the March for Our Lives rally Saturday afternoon. It was one of several such events across the nation, urging new steps in response to the recent series of mass shootings. Ryan Spinks said high school organizers reached out to him and Makenzie Christy, who were putting on the event, hoping to do the same as them.

Joe Craig who was interviewed in this videos claims that he is a gun owner and that he hunts. He also claims that he would never own an automatic weapon. Mr. Craig, I am concerned that you as a gun owner are not aware that automatic weapons are illegal in this country. This is part of the problem in my mind. When people who do not know existing laws want to impose laws and restrictions on me.

BDC1990, it is you who doesn’t know the existing laws. “Automatic weapons” are NOT “illegal” in “this country”, they are just heavily regulated. Some individual states have made owning them illegal.

And I am concerned you are unaware that automatic weapons (firearms) are NOT illegal in this country.

Never have been since the first Gatling gun showed up.

You must undergo through background check by Feds/ATF; pay tax stamp; you cannot sell or otherwise transfer the weapon to anyone else but another qualified owner; or you can turn it in to law enforcement/ATF if no longer wanted.

The sale/registration and possession of an automatic weapon is strictly monitored/enforced.

They also start around 25 bills, large. You can buy cut up stuff and put it back together and register it for a few grand less, but well north of $15,000.00 still. One fella on our crew has a 20mm Lahti Anti-Tank rifle, and it was $22,000.00… assault weapons are a 1/4 of a years wage or more in price, then feed it.

These folks have no idea. They just know what the talking picture box tells them to know about them

In this article it claims that the March For Our Lives in “urging new steps”, but it does not specify what those “new steps” might be. The official website for this group does not specify either. It’s hard to support something that is not specific about what it is they want to see changed or proposing. Isn’t it a straw-man argument by simply saying they want lives saved?

There is no simple fix, no law that will change this issue. Perhaps limiting magazine capacity, requiring registering some firearms (those specifically not for hunting), limiting ownership from some individuals with known histories (suicide attempts, assault, etc). There are many discussions. But, we certainly need to address the lack of respect for others lives. Why are people so violence prone. Just look at all the smash and grabs, the assaults, the shootings nationwide, violent robberies. What is causing these young men (primarily) to be so violent. Until that is addressed, no laws will prevent the killings.

The AR15 is not short for Assault Rifle like most uneducated people who like to talk about firearms think. It is short for Armalite Rifle…the AR-15 is a sporting rifle that is specifically for hunting, and I do in hunt with it.. It’s a great semi-auto for dispatching the rock chucks and coyotes on my property. I find that the people who want to make rules, laws and restrictions to limit my rights as a law abiding firearms owner, tend to be the least educated on current laws and often don’t even know the difference between auto, semi-auto, single-action, double-action,etc.

The AR-15 design has been around since the mid-50s.

It was very popular with the Irish Republican Army during “the Troubles” as the original version had a folding stock, was very light, and with the original 20-round magazines was a fearsome match for what the Brits were fielding.

The “AR” was manufactured in both semi and automatic versions.

In the early 1960s, the US military tested and adopted what became known as the M16 battle rifle. It replaced the heavier M14 battle rifle which was chambered for the 7.62 round. Lighter and in 5.56 (.223 for you civilians), the M16 would undergo improved versions (M16A1, M16A2).

These were full size battle rifles. Vietnam would see the CAR-15, a shorter version with telescoping stock, be adopted for US special operations units.

The M4 carbine is the evolution of the CAR-15. It came into being in full force during the Global War on Terrorism.

The “AR-15” was never designed as “hunting rifle” unless one was hunting humans. It was made in the semi automatic version, first by Colt, to cash in on the M16 “mystique”, and rooted in marketing it as a “sporting rifle”.

The true “sporting” or ranch rifle was and continues to be made by Ruger. It is now available in multi caliber versions, folding stocks, auto and semi auto.

The “AR” is simply the anti-gun ownership by citizens favorite whipping boy – especially now days.

Notice, also, the AK-47, also long available in the US market, and in both semi and auto versions, doesn’t get a peep from the politicos who are pushing for still more “gun laws”?

And it is available in a “sporting” version, too.

Laws only apply to honest people. Crooks and a lot of D.A.’s could care less.

So why should we have laws?

Simple truth is criminals have high powered weapons, I deserve the right to one up them and defend myself. I refuse be a victim and I don’t believe the government will protect me, because they won’t.

which new laws are the mentally ill criminals going to follow? I’ll wait

Technically a double action revolver is considered an automatic weapon. For the normies out there, automatic simply means every time you pull the trigger the gun fires, vs for example a single action revolver where you manually have to use your thumb to cock the hammer between each shot OR a pump action shot gun where you have to pump it between shots. So, you could estimate at least 75% of the guns people own are automatic.

A key takeaway for both gun rights and gun control advocates: Oregon is ranked 11th in the country as far as gun control legislation goes. If you’re overall content as a gun owner in Oregon, then you support common-sense gun control laws.

If you are content with most any of the regulations coming out of Salem these days you are not paying attention.

you can never create enough laws to control evil

I bet all the marchers fElT better about themselves after the march. But, as we all know the march did absolutely nothing… Bored rich libs in bend, never short of entertaining stupidity…

march for our lives, except babies lives. Which flag are the libs gonna fly next month?
