The Detroit Lakes Tribune accepts community calendar items for publication online and, space permitting, in our Wednesday and Sunday print editions. Submissions must be made at least a week in advance of the event date, in writing, to either dltribune@dlnewspapers.com or vgerdes@dlnewspapers.com. Each submission must include the date, time and location of event, and where to go for more information (phone, email and/or website). Also include whether the event is free or paid admission, and how much it costs when applicable.

HSL Open House and Rummage Sale: The Humane Society of the Lakes will host an open house and rummage sale at its shelter on U.S. Highway 59, just north of Detroit Lakes, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be many pet items and baked goods for purchase to support HSL's mission, along with some adoptable pets visitors can meet throughout the day.

Coin Club: Visit the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 2:30 p.m. for an exploratory meeting regarding the possibility of starting up a local coin club. Bring in any coins you have questions about. Have coins you would like to show off? Bring those along, too. Free and open to the public.

Letter Carriers Food Drive: Local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers are banding together to host the 30th annual "Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive" as part of their regular postal delivery routes. Leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox and your letter carrier will do the rest.

Northern Lights Dance Academy: The Frazee-based Northern Lights Dance Academy presents its 2022 spring recital, "All in This Together," at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre, with two performances set for 1 and 7 p.m. Tickets available online at dlccc.org/holmes-theatre.html, by phone at 218-847-7469, or in person at the Holmes Box Office, 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes.

Color Guard Breakfast: The Lake Region Veterans Color Guard will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Club, 810 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes. Suggested donation is $8 for a meal including scrambled eggs, pancakes or French toast, sausage or bacon, and coffee or orange juice. All are welcome.

Tamarac Visitor Center Opening: Opening day at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge's Visitor Center. Stop by between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Check out the exhibits, the birdfeeders, watch a movie, take a short hike and shop in the Friends of Tamarac nature store. All are welcome.

Summit Dance: Detroit Lakes' own Summit Dance will present its 2022 spring recital, "Better Together," at 2:30 p.m. inside the Historic Holmes Theatre, 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes. Tickets available online at dlccc.org/holmes-theatre.html.

Author Visit-Margaret Standafer: Visit the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 7 p.m. for a presentation by author Margaret Standafer ("I Known an Old Lady"), who will be discussing how she overcame her reluctance and stubbornness — and then used that stubbornness — to become a best-selling, award-winning author. Free and open to the public.

High School Spring Art Show: Detroit Lakes High School art students will be showcasing their latest artwork at a spring art show taking place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in DLHS ARt Room 452. A variety of artwork will be showcased, and there will be appetizers, live music and "make and take" projects for visitors. Open to the public; all ages welcome.

Old-Time Variety Dance: Albert Mikesh will provide the music for an Old-Time Variety Dance taking place from 1-4 p.m. in the Frazee Event Center. All are welcome; admission is $5 per person.

Library Book Club: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 3 p.m. for a discussion of the book, "Notes from a Young Black Chef: A Memoir by Kwame Onwuachi," which is about a young man pursuing his dreams despite experiencing difficulties. Celebrate Aging Expo: Detroit Lakes' Holiday Inn will host a Celebrate Aging Expo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seminars, demonstrations, food samples, door prizes and more than 30 vendors will greet visitors, along with complimentary cookies, coffee and muffins. Free admission.

Becker County Republicans: The Becker County Republicans will hold their May meeting at the Sandbar II, 1150 Randolph Road, Detroit Lakes, starting at 7 p.m. Come early, bring your appetite and enjoy selections from the Sandbar's delicious menu.

Summer Theatre Camp Auditions: Auditions for the 2022 Holmes Summer Theater Camp will be Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m. to noon; and Monday, May 23, 5-7 p.m. Pre-registration for the camp is required; intended for kids in grades 5-12.
