Latest Dimensional Metrology, Inspection and Quality News

Over the last decade innovations such as smart multi-sensor systems, virtual program simulation, and measurement-centric manufacturing operations, have changed the role of metrology inside of the manufacturing work-flow. Previously, measurement solutions were generally employed for quality checks as the final step of a product’s conformance and verification, typically operating as post-processing activities. The result of the latest industrial revolution is large amounts of measured data generated for process management, monitoring, and diagnostic activities which is required to be available in real-time and used to facilitate production management and analysis. Highly digitized factories of the future will continuously collect and share data through inter-connected devices, machines, and production processes where in-process metrology solutions offer fully automated and responsive control and verification solutions.

A quality control digital twin is a computer-created digital representation of a perfect ‘nominal’ part superimposed with generated measurement data, from a physical component. during a stage in its manufacturing process. The digital twin ‘mirrors’ the real component status and shows exactly what is happening on the manufacturing floor, at any given time, and what, if any, production process adjustments are necessary. With manufacturing digital twins, users can immediately pinpoint product quality issues, monitor machine performance, and dynamically make changes as needed – with a minimum time lag. The integration of artificial intelligence into the digital-twin generation software allows the prediction of trends and adjustments to machinery in advance of out-of-tolerance parts being produced by production. In the future, many machinery adjustments will be made automatically completely closing the manufacturing loop.

This month we published a number of articles covering Digital Twins including ‘’Enabling Manufacturing Innovation With Virtual Twin Experience’; ‘Simulation Using ‘Digital Twin’ Enables Efficient Production Line Modification’, ‘Digital Twins – More Than Just A Software Solution’, and ‘Quantum Digital Twin Initiative Launched at Bosch Factory’.

As we leave the ‘dog days of summer’ behind the exhibition train gets back into motion with the hugely important International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago, USA being held for the first time in 4 years. Metrology.News will be reporting directly from the show-floor of the Quality Pavilion reporting on new products and the latest manufacturing metrology trends.

August was the month that was scheduled for the long overdue migration of Metrology.News to its own dedicated server platform. We apologize for the site being down for a couple of days, and its intermittent access, which occurred during the transfer process. Thankfully the site is now fully operational again with faster page-load speeds and equipped with unlimited memory and file space ensuring the trouble-free future site operation.

The magazine below highlights a selection of our August published stories; the complete library of August articles can be accessed by clicking here.

As usual I welcome your comments, news and views along with guest articles – my inbox is always open.
