Becoming an Apprentice:
Becoming an Apprentice is possible through two routes:
(1) One is hired by a union contractor as an Apprentice and is sent to the apprenticeship office. The Contractor will issue the new employee a "Letter of Intent to Hire."
The applicant will be required to submit an application, and the Apprenticeship Committee shall evaluate the applicant to see if he or she has the necessary qualifications for entry into the program.
(2) A person interested in the trade may submit the necessary application, and the Apprenticeship Committee shall evaluate the applicant to see if he or she has the necessary qualifications for entry into the program.
Applicants meeting all qualifications shall receive the Apprenticeship Committees approval, and be eligible for employment. Once employment is secured through the Union, the applicant will be issued a "Letter of Intent to Hire" by the Contractor, and subsequently be interviewed and indentured as an Apprentice.
If You Have Experience:
Candidates with previous experience in the construction trade can ask for and have such experience evaluated by the Apprenticeship Committee at the time that they make application, or before they sign an agreement. Where such experience warrants, the Apprenticeship Committee will place the Apprentice in the appropriate period, and such advanced credit shall be subject to review prior to advancement. Apprentices granted credit for previous experience shall be paid wages for any progression step granted (note: after signing the Apprenticeship Agreement and being employed, the Apprentice cannot request an evaluation of past experience).
